After reading a post from BiPenny on another thread I thought I'd start another thread on the subject. Whats your view on the unemployment benefits system in the UK, I'm all for it and think its a really good sytem but I do think people do milk it and abuse the system, I think for any person that is able to work shouldn't be able to claim it for a long period of time. I'd suggest the following system if someone comes out of work. Date of first claim up to 3 months: Left to find a job they want by themselves, no having to sign on or anything like that. 3 months to 6 months: Have to spend at least 20 hours a week in a Job Centre doing training course or applying for jobs. etc. 6 months onwards: Loose the right to be fussy about the jobs they accept and have to take the first one thats offered to them, otherwise loose any benifits paid to them, From this point onwards they would have to work full time doing community work ect. that way they are at least contributing to society instead of being a drain.

That's all well and good. Its just sometimes its hard to get employed if you have a sparse CV. Plus if you have other problems such as childcare arrangements to make and no available jobs for school hours and school term time only makes things harder. No system is ever perfect and there are people out there on benefits that have no legitimate reason for not working.

The poeple we are aiming at would be those who have no legitimate reason not to work. The system would have to work in favour of those with family situations, it would make employers sit up and take notice a bit more and hopefully open more avenues for those with limited experience and time. The idea being that if after 6 months a job can be given to them which fits in with LEGITIMATE time constraints they must take it. Many firms and job centres now help with childcare arrangements. The main idea behind all of this thinking is to get us away from the sponging culture and the idea that there is no purpose in working as on minimum wage you only earn about £20 a week more than on the dole (I believe, this is based on info from a proper sponger (my ex's brother in law) who should have had a kick up the arse from the state.)

I'm still unsure about the whole thing, I know there are people out there on benefits that have absolutely no intention of doing anything else. I don't understand why they're so happy living on such little money and doing nothing with their lives. Aren't they embarrassed by their lack of contribution? I'm all for extra training and helping people better their skills for better job opputunities.

Its the people on disability/incapacity benefits that need looking at.Ok some people cant walk, get a job answering a phone, some people cant sit for long periods, well get a job where ur moving about. Its far to easy to go the docs nowadays and say you have a bad back and need 6 months off work. Test the sods every six months, put them through vigourous tests,i bet at least 70 % of them can work!! |

I agree in a way. I don't understand why people wouldn't want to work in the first place. I get board after a week away from work and you if your not working you don't have the money to do anything anyway. I remember the month I was out of work. I hardly left the house because I just could not afford it.
