![]() There are two main types of Broadband internet: ADSL which uses the telephone exchange DSL which uses an internet exchange ADSL is a shared internet connection, your community around you [neighbours] share a single internet connection with you. You are allocated bandwidth by a server and the more people using it in your area the slower your speed becomes. So ADSL customers who pay for 8mb or 22mb rarely get that speed, in order to do so all your neighbours would need not to be using the net. I have DSL. DSL is a direct cable connection which goes from you to your ISP meaning you don't share the bandwidth of your community. DSL customers get the full badnwidth they pay for. I am on Virgin Media S size package and I get 2meg net and as the test shows i have a 2538kb/s download speed which is actaully greater than 2mb since 1mb is 1024kb and 2mb is 2048kb So if you want a fast internet conenction go and fork out the money for the Virgin Media 8meg DSL conenction you will not be upset and their customer service in my experience is bloody brillaint. [You will get a disconnect about once a month though usually in the middle of the night for maintenance and if you download more than 2GB in a day i think it is, they cut your bandwidth in half, this is a fair use policy which I don't mind]

Some small corrections to your post. The two main broadband connetions in the country are ADSL and cable. ADSL is a variation on DSL. With ADSL you get a faster download speed than upload. the other type of DSL used in this country is SDSL but this is mainly used by business as it gives the same speed up as down. ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line and SDSL stands for Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line. All broadband connections share the availbile bandwith regardless of whether its cable or ADSL its called contention and its how they keep the price within the budget of consumers, a dedicated conntection would cost upwards of £18k per year. ADSL's major problem is that BT tend to have big exchanges which can be miles away from the peoples homes. With ADSL the further away you are from the exchange the slower the maximum speed gets, This affects cable as well but there exchanges are the green street cabs you see which tend to only be a couple of hundred meters away. Virgin Medias Cable Internet is the best you can get, Unfortunaly thier ADSL isn't so good. If your able to get cable in your area I'd always go for it but then I am a little bias. |

In the case of Virgin Media thier Cable internet connection is actually a fibre optic connection. And as for both sharing the 'neighbourhood' bandwidth I have researched that and you appear to be right [this goes against everything I was taught about it in Communications Technology]Ok so I was wrong I admit it ![]() But still I have a 2mb connection and even now in the afternoon I have 2336kb/s connection speed, so I would say the cable option delivers on its promise ![]()

Not 100% true but the ASA would agree with you. VM still use copper from the street cab to you but not enough to have an effect on your connection. Agree VM internet is the best and even more so that I only pay £1.50 for a 20meg connection but even if i had to pay full price I'd still have it.
